CELSI Frontiers Seminar: Modelling Slovakia’s Green Future with DEEPLAB

July 21, 2025

At the most recent CELSI Frontiers Seminar, researchers from our DEEPLAB project - Monika Martišková and Jakub Barszcz - shared preliminary results of their ongoing work on the labour market impacts of deep decarbonisation in Slovakia’s most CO₂-intensive industries.

The DEEPLAB project explores how climate transition policies will affect workers and jobs, especially in hard-to-abate sectors and their supply chains. Using a combination of data analysis, desk research, and interviews with key stakeholders—including industry leaders and labour policy experts—the team developed and discussed three future decarbonisation scenarios for 2030 and 2050.

These scenarios have now been modelled using CELSI’s extended IO IMPACTECH framework, offering detailed projections on employment shifts and qualification demands. The seminar offered a first look at the methodology and early findings—before these will be formally presented to scientific and policy audiences in Slovakia and beyond.

This project, supported by the Slovak National Recovery and Resilience Plan, aims to inform future labour market strategies and ensure that the green transition is not only effective, but just.

Many thanks to Monika Martišková and Jakub Barszcz for their ongoing leadership in this critical work, and to all participants for enriching the discussion.
